The details 📝

If you haven't been to Coventry Village in Morley, you're missing out. Coventry Village is a 4.5 hectare shopping centre with some of Perth's best Asian food. Of them, Uncle Lam is one of our favourites.

🍜 Pho Tai $14 - raw beef hofan soup

Uncle Lam's menu is short and sweet, compared to typical Vietnamese restaurants, where it's not uncommon to have over 100+ menu items. They sell two of my (Eddy) favourite dishes - pho and com tam (broken rice) and execute them well. If I only had a day left to live, these two dishes would be on the list to eat.

Pho

If you haven't had pho (an easy way to pronounce it is "fur") before, you've probably been living under a rock. Go try some now! Uncle Lam's broth runs savoury with a hint of sweetness. Coriander and aromatic fans (like myself) will be pleased with the generous garnishes of coriander and spring onion. The noodles used have a slight chew to them (my preference for pho noodle).

Broken what?

🥩 Com Tam Suon Cha Trung (special grilled pork with rice) $14 - grilled pork chop, fried egg, pork cake & broken rice

My absolute favourite Vietnamese dish is com tam, commonly known as broken rice. The name "broken rice" comes from the smaller, broken rice grains which are used, which gives the rice a different texture. For me, broken rice makes for a perfect, year round dish, especially when it gets a little warmer and I'm not after something soupy.

In terms of flavours, com tam is a beautiful blend of sweet, salty and savoury flavours from things like fish sauce, lemongrass and scallion oil. Pickled vegetables are usually served with com tam, with Uncle Lam opting for picked beansprouts - something I haven't seen too commonly in Perth, in my two decades of com tam consumption.

🍤 Goi Cuon Tom Thit (rice paper rolls) $6 - steamed prawn and pork, mint & salad (2pc)

Another Vietnamese staple are goi cuon, or rice paper rolls (recently I learned on the Dave Chang Show that American's like call them "summer rolls"). I usually order these as a starter.
