PEKOPEKOEATS VOL. 141 | 15 AUG 2025
Burgers, Japanese, Korean and Chinese Malaysian.

Hi friends!
In this edition we predominantly cover several Japanese and Korean restaurants - three of which are BBQ places.
Hoodburger
Dining Akashi
GoGiYo Korean BBQ
Sumiya Gin
Nam Hangang
Silver Sushi
Fugu 8

Hoodburger (multiple locations)

Without a doubt, Hoodburger is our go to place when we want burgers. The burgers are great and the fries - are probably our favourite in Perth when paired with burgers (we're big on thin, shoestring fries).
My usual is their double supreme while Paige's is their Swiss mushroom.
We got these burgers for takeaway during our last visit and they retained heat pretty well even after the 15 min drive home. A friend of ours works here and apparently there's an "off-the-menu", "secret" burger. One for me to try during my next visit.
Dining Akashi (Applecross)

Dining Akashi is the place to go to if you're after a tempura specialty restaurant (R.I.P. Hitomebore - our favourite tempura bowl place). Although the original owner Makoto-san has since sold the restaurant to a staff member, the food quality remains unchanged.
Our go-to dish here is their premium tempura donburi, which makes for a surprisingly satiating lunch.
They've also got a monthly dinner omakase for those interested.
GoGiYo Korean BBQ (Kardinya)

GoGiYo Korean BBQ is a relatively new Korean offering south of the river (next to ALDI Kardinya). The overall experience and quality of food is comparable to places like THE GOGI or Marubang, some of our favourite places for KBBQ. Pricing is also consistent with these places. If you live around Kardinya, this place will save you the trek out (heaps of free parking in the front is also a plus).

GoGiYo beef set B $194 - wagyu chuck tail flap, wagyu chuck rib meat, wagyu rib finger, wagyu oyster blade, marinated beef rib, kimchi jjigae and rich steamed egg
Ordering is done via QR code (Posnet).

Sumiya Gin (Northbridge)

There's a handful of JBBQ places in Perth, but the one we've kept coming back to over the years, is the OG Sumiya Gin on William Street. We did visit the all-you-can-eat branch on James Street years back, but much prefer the a-la-carte William Street branch. Quality > quantity of food, any day.

Sumiya Gin's $70 set menu is what we've been gravitating towards over the past couple of visits. Sure, if budget is your concern, you might be able to come in under the $70 asking price, but for the price, you get a great spread and, coming from a big eater like myself, you'll leave well fed. We have on the three occasions we've had this set meal anyway.
Sumiya Gin $70 set menu
Ox tongue, chicken and pork belly
Prawn and squid
Tofu and cabbage salad
Miso soup and rice
Edamame and kimchi
Karaage and takoyaki
Wagyu (salt and pepper) Wagyu (soy)
There's a great range of proteins, starting with lighter white meat, before transitioning to a couple sides and finally ending with heavier and richer wagyu.
Silver Sushi (Willetton)

Silver Sushi has been our old and trusty go-to. Recently we've been enjoying their aburi wagyu uramaki sushi roll. Pretty reasonable value given you get a slice of wagyu atop of each piece of sushi.

Aburi wagyu uramaki sushi $23 - avocado, mixed leaf salad, onion, wagyu beef slices torched and topped with fried garlic, sweet sauce and spring onion

Nam Hangang (Riverton)

Bossam (S) $34
Nam Hangang, opened up in Riverton a couple months back. It's convenient for those SOR as this is sister store of Marubang in Northbridge. Food quality - both non-BBQ and BBQ is consistent with Marubang and a selection of frozen options are also available for purchase.

Donkatsu $20
Fugu 8 (Willetton)
Fugu 8 has moved from West Leederville to our local stomping grounds in Willetton. We say this time and time again, but we're ever grateful and privileged to be in a location so close to a myriad of great SEA food options 😌.

We visited with a couple friends. Everything got a thumbs up from me. Fugu 8 is on par with the great Singaporean / Malaysian Chinese restaurants we have in our vicinity - so the best restaurant really boils down to personal taste at the end of the day (my hot take).

I'm not a laksa person, so I'll reserve judgement.

Whereas my preference for Hokkien mee leans towards that of the dryer, KL style Hokkien mee.

Shrimp paste wings were great!
