We'll be on break.

WEEKLY DIGEST 096 | 19 JAN 2024

This weekend, we'll be joining what seems like the rest of Australia in Japan. So we'll probably be taking a break from Pekopeko until March or so (or until I can muster up the motivation to post again).

We're also thinking of expanding the website "repertoire" to include more travel bloggy stuff too. The last time we were in Japan was in late 2018 / early 2019, so we're looking forward to checking out things like Shibuya Sky, the Warner Brothers studio and we even managed to get tickets to check out the new teamLab in Azabudai Hills.

Let us know that that content interests you!

I'm quite looking forward to photographing things which aren't.. just food. And making the most of my new-ish Ricoh GR IIIx and Sony 70-200mm f4 macro lens (big zoom boi).

Catch you guys on the other side!
also time to start packing lol

β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

The Wang's Treasure House

Top down shot of dim sum dishes on a white tablecloth

The Wang's Treasure House's dim sum offering wins the best thing we ate last week. From a price-to-taste ratio, Paige reckons she also enjoyed the food here more dim sum she had recently at our usual, Canton Lane in Belmont.

The pineapple buns hit my Asian pastry - bun cravings.

What We Ate 🍴

Rossonero Pizzeria

Top down photo of pizza with cacciatore, crushed potatoes and rosemary
The King $20 - cacciatore, crushed potatoes, mozzarella, caramelised onions, rosemary & cream base

We've probably been here a dozen times now, and Rossonero Pizzeria has yet to disappoint. The King is still our favourite pizza here. And Paige and I will gladly commit the foodie faux pas of.. Ordering the same thing. That's how much we love The King ❀️.

Price point is also very, very competitive. I dined with a couple colleagues and easily inhaled.. 1 and a half pizzas.. πŸ™ˆ

Rossonero Pizzeria (Maylands)
Our favourite pizza joint in Perth that serves up light pizza with a range of traditional and not-so traditional toppings.

Dessert Garden

Cone shaped coloured tower made from ice with a scoop of ice-cream on top
Strawberry condensed milk $21.8 - crushed ice, fresh strawberry & vanilla ice-cream

After inhaling copious amounts of pizza, we wanted something lighter for dessert. That's were Dessert Garden came in clutch.

I think I personally prefer their snowflake ice (peal milk tea snowflake ice being my pick), given the ice is more powdery. But this one was still great.

Dessert Garden (Northbridge)
A speciality dessert store serving a number of highly customisable Taiwanese and Asian desserts (think taro, shaved ice, herbal jelly and coconut sago), a range of bubble tea and vegan options.

Cakespresso

Cream puff chocolate $6

Thanks to our friend @brb.bbt (she's our brain trust when it comes to bubble tea reviews) for grabbing us some of Cakespresso's cream puffs (not pictured - the durian one). The cream puffs here were delicious!

El Pollo Loco

Top down shot of flat lay comprising of grilled chicken, shoestring fries, salad, Lebanese bread and rice
10-piece premium chicken and fine cut beef rices $74,9 - sauce, large chips, seasoned rice, bread, pickles & large salad

Our Friday night consisted of sweating it out in the terribly warm weather and enjoying El Pollo Loco - a new charcoal chicken place that's opened up in Mount Lawley.

Chicken was good and it's a decent competitor to On Fire Charcoal Chicken. If you were to ask which one is "better", I'd probably opt for On Fire Charcoal Chicken. There are some aspects which I enjoyed more at El Pollo Loco and some aspects I enjoyed more at On Fire Charcoal Chicken.

TL;DR - if you're NOR, go to El Pollo Loco. If you're SOR, go to On Fire Charcoal Chicken.

Cafe Guilty Pleasure

Close up of coffee
Einspanner $7

By the time we were done with dinner, we decided to seek refuge from the rain, next door at Cafe Guilty Pleasure. Paige opted for an einspanner while I opted for a refreshing blended ice yuzu drink.

Chopsticks Viet Restaurant

Rounding up this week of eating is an old favourite - Chopsticks Viet Restaurant's shaking beef.

Com chien bo luc lac $25 - shaking beef fried rice
